Saint John Police officers are stepping up enforcement of allowable tinting of vehicle windows. The provincial motor vehicle act says tinted windows cannot prevent more than 30% of light passing through the windows.

Police have noticed a growing number of vehicles in the city with modified tinted windows that exceed the limits in the motor vehicle act. The increased checks have resulted in 75 tickets being handed out for tinted window violations. Sergeant Mike McCaig says “along with it not being legal, modifications to tint on the windows of vehicles -is a safety concern.”

Police also say anyone installing tint on vehicle windows exceeding the 30% limit can be charged – and – mechanic shops inspecting vehicles with modified tinted windows can be fined if the vehicle passed inspection.
