The site of the of first surgery with anesthesia in Canada, performed in 1847 by Dr Martin Hunter Peters is now sports a “Local Historic Place” designation. Common Council approved a recommendation for the designation from the Heritage Development Board earlier this week as part of the annual Heritage Awards. The house – built circa 1843 – was singled out for its architectural and historic contributions to the city.
Winners of awards include Jennifer Irving Photography for “Storefront Rehabilitation” for her new studio on Water Street.
The “Local Business Signage” award went to three businesses in the uptown – The Art Warehouse – Juniper – and Obscurity.
Paul and Rena Chase received an award for “Commitment to Craft” to recognize their technical skills and knowledge in conservation trades.
Any project completed through a Heritage Permit during the year is eligible to be considered for an award. The awards are presented by Common Council to give owners – contractors – and artisans an opportunity to highlight their work “in preserving the built heritage in Saint John.”
